Welcome to iGEM Community: Beyond the Competition!
by Dorothy Zhang and Hassnain Bokhari
The iGEM pin is a special keepsake celebrating the competition season. For some, this pin commemorates your first experience in the iGEM competition. For others, this year’s pin will be added to your collection of pins from previous iGEM seasons. But for all of you, the iGEM pin represents more than a badge of honor. As an iGEM alumnus, you automatically become a member of iGEM Community (formerly After iGEM), and your iGEM pin becomes a memento symbolizing this vibrant and active community – Welcome to iGEM Community!
Each year, you and your fellow iGEMers worked to solve local challenges with synbio. Now, through iGEM Community, you have many avenues for continuing your journey and making an impact in your own way to build a better future with synthetic biology.
Grow your career and realize your passions
“iGEM Community is a continuation, you first tested a synbio solution to a particular issue as a team member, and now you grow into a future leader in charge of major topics which could be regional or international, creating the value and impact for the whole synbio community.”
– Cibele Zolnier, iGEM Team USP-EEL-Brazil 2018, iGEM Ambassador for Latin America 2020, iGEM Community Coordinator 2021
Because of your iGEM experience and passion, you have tremendous potential to shape the future of synthetic biology. We encourage you to apply to become an iGEM Ambassador to represent and promote iGEM and synthetic biology in your home region. Become part of a network geared towards specialized areas related to synthetic biology, such as Academia & Research, Education, Governance & Policy, Industry, Open Science & Accessibility, and Science Communications. Join or create new iGEM Community initiatives – from the Global Alliance of SynBio Associations and the Phoenix Project to the Mentors Network and Women in STEM, and more!
“iGEM Community is not only one network, but multiple different ones weaved together and all connected to synthetic biology. Through these networks, we discover and re-curate the resources which are produced and benefiting iGEMers.”
– Nemira Zilinskaite, iGEM Team Nottingham 2018, iGEM Ambassador for Europe 2020, iGEM Community Coordinator 2021
“iGEM Community is iGEMer’s community, but also it is much more. Not only do we come together and share together … we build together.”
– Varsha Jaisimha, iGEM Team IISER-Pune-India 2019, iGEM Ambassador for Asia 2020, iGEM Community Coordinator 2021
Wherever you are in the world, and whatever stage you reach in your career and life, we want to be with you every step of the way. We invite you to become part of a team that is shaping the future of synthetic biology. Apply here.
