This year, iGEM is introducing three new Villages – Agriculture, Bioremediation, and Space. Though iGEM teams have worked on projects in these areas for many years, this will be the first time teams will be gathered together within these official Villages.
As the study of life and our environment, biology is inextricably linked to climate change and climate tech, and therefore holds the key to addressing the biggest challenge of our generation. By engineering biology, we can move away from fossil fuel dependency, decrease agricultural emissions, repurpose land, and stop plastic pollution.
Tomorrow (August 12) is International Youth Day, a day designated by the United Nations to celebrate youth as active partners in the global society. This year’s theme “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health” aims to highlight the meaningful participation of young people in transforming food systems – from the infrastructure needed for feeding a population, to nutrition related chronic disease and unsustainable farming practices.
