The iGEM team wiki is the primary means by which teams communicate their entire project to the world. The wiki is essentially a website that provides background information, describes project goals, and shows experimental results. Like other forms of scientific publication, the wiki also includes references to acknowledge the work of previous iGEM teams and other research groups that have helped inform the current project. Importantly, the team wiki has been a key deliverable since iGEM first became an international competition in 2005, and is archived so it can be accessed by future teams and iGEM community members.
The countdown to the final days before the iGEM 2022 wiki freeze has begun, and this year’s teams are no doubt feeling the pressure. This coming Monday (October 10) is World Mental Health Day, a day to “raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.” While the wiki freeze is a memorable experience, it can also bring added stress to iGEMers already handling a heavy workload.
Initially, team wikis were created using MediaWiki – a ground-breaking (at the time), open source, collaborative platform. But there have been tremendous advances in software development since then, most notably the creation of Git – a software developer’s dream.
It happens every year … and it always comes too soon … and you meant to finish earlier … and you wish you had more time … and you just now thought of a better way to show something … and you didn’t realize how many things could go wrong … and then …. it’s one minute to midnight Eastern time and … the iGEM wiki freeze happens!
